Poland’s Alvernia Studios is betting on legal thriller Arbitrage, joining the production, starring Tim Roth, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Curtiss Cook and Laetitia Casta, as an investor and co-producer.

The feature, written and directed by Nicholas Jarecki, is currently shooting in New York. Post-production will take place at Alvernia’s studio outside Krakow. Arbitrage is the second U.S. production the Polish studio has backed, following  Amy Heckerling’s Vamps starring Sigourney Weaver. The Polish studio is following a gameplay common to many international studios in providing gap financing for independent productions as an incentive for them to set up shop on their (foreign) backlot. It’s a strategy Germany’s Studio Babelsberg has used effectively on productions such as Jaume Collet-Serra’s Unknown starring Liam Neeson. Britain’s Pinewood has recently got into the act, with plans to invest millions in co-producing low-budget U.K. features.
